Single-trip medical
Emergency medical cover for one trip, for exactly the days you're away.
Your provincial health plan pays very little outside Canada. Ontario's OHIP pays at most $400 a day for emergency hospital care abroad and up to $50 a day for outpatient care, and it doesn't pay to fly you home. Compare travel insurance from Canadian insurers and see your gap below.

Strongly recommended. U.S. medical care is among the most expensive in the world, and provincial plans pay only a small part of it.
Many plans cover pre-existing conditions that were stable for a set period before you leave. The definition of 'stable' and the period differ by insurer and age.
Single-trip covers one trip. Annual multi-trip covers every trip in a year up to a maximum length per trip, and is often cheaper if you travel several times a year.
Some credit cards include travel medical cover, but often with low age limits, short trip lengths or lower limits. Check the details, and buy a top-up if you need more days.
Provincial plans cover you in other provinces for many services, but not everything, such as some ambulance costs or prescriptions. Out-of-province travel insurance fills those gaps.
Some insurers allow it with a waiting period; many don't. It's best to buy before you leave.
Yes, but that's a different product. See our visitors to Canada insurance page for family and friends visiting you.
