$100,000 is the IRCC minimum. $150,000 or $200,000 costs more but leaves more room for a serious hospital stay.
Plans offer deductibles from $0 up to several thousand dollars. A higher deductible lowers the premium, and you pay that amount yourself per claim.
Covering stable conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure adds to the premium. Stability periods differ, for example 90 days for younger ages and 180 days for older ages on some plans.
Standard, enhanced and premium versions of the same insurer's plan differ in benefits and limits. In our example, an enhanced plan cost $222.65 more than the standard version.
Paying once is usually cheapest overall. Monthly plans add a deposit and a setup fee, typically $50 to $120.
IRCC accepts a policy paid in full or paid in instalments with a deposit. Here is what the deposit looked like on the plans above.
Secure Travel Standard for a 66-year-old: $1,620.60 paid once, or $135.05 a month with the first and last month plus a $120 setup fee paid up front.

Prices for the same coverage varied by $1,180.96 in our example. One quote shows them all side by side.
A deductible lowers the premium. Choose an amount your family could pay comfortably in an emergency.
If a birthday falls just before the start date, compare prices before and after it.
A cheaper plan that excludes your parent's condition can leave the family paying the hospital bill.
It depends mostly on age. For a 66-year-old with $100,000 of coverage, no deductible and no pre-existing condition cover, live quotes on October 17, 2026 ranged from $1,620.60 to $2,801.56 for one year, with a middle price of $1,806.75. Older applicants, higher coverage and pre-existing condition cover all raise the price.
In the same example, monthly instalment plans ranged from about $135 to $220 a month. Most insurers also ask for a deposit when you buy, often the first and last month or two months of premium, plus a setup fee of $50 to $120.
Yes. IRCC accepts insurance that is paid in full or paid in instalments with a deposit. A quote alone is not accepted. Send the policy and proof of the deposit with the application.
Each insurer prices risk differently and includes different benefits, stability rules and claim limits. In our example the most expensive plan cost $1,180.96 more per year than the cheapest for the same $100,000 of coverage, so compare the benefit summary, not only the price.
Yes. Choosing a deductible lowers the premium, and you pay that amount yourself if there is a claim. A deductible does not affect the visa decision as long as the policy meets IRCC's rules.
Usually yes. Plans that cover stable pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure cost more than plans that exclude them. If your parent has a condition, the cheaper exclusion plan may not pay for an emergency related to it.
Each person is priced on their own age and health. Quoting both parents together lets you compare the two premiums side by side and keeps both policies on the same dates.
Most insurers refund the premium if the visa is refused before the policy starts, and refund unused time if your parent returns early with no claims. Fees and conditions differ by insurer, so check the policy wording or ask us.
General information only. The insurer's policy wording decides coverage, and IRCC decides visa applications.
